Finding St. Louis Obituaries

Utilize SLPL's Obituary Index to identify which date, page, and newspaper your families' obituary is listed. Then take advantage of the library's various digital newspaper databases to locate that obituary!

Home

The St. Louis Public Library has an award winning Obituary Index that features over a million listings in an index of obituaries, death notices, and burial permits that were found in local St. Louis Newspapers. These listings date all the way back to 1880 and with the hard work of SLPL staff and volunteers, the index is continuously growing! The Obituary Index is freely available to everyone - you do not need a library card to access it.

NOTE: This database is an Index to the obituary - you will not see the actual newspaper article by using this resource.

Take the information found in the Index and utilize the library's various digital newspaper databases to locate the actual obituary. To remotely access these digital newspaper databases, you will need to have an SLPL library card. If you do not have an SLPL library card, you can also get access to these databases by visiting the Genealogy Room located on the 3rd floor of the St. Louis Public Library - Central location.

ASSISTANCE: If you need help locating an obituary, or do not live in the St. Louis area, you can fill out our Obituary Request Form. Due to the high number of requests we receive, please limit your request to no more than 5 obituaries per week.
